She's getting rid of her material possessions so she can focus on spending time with her mother. "I'm getting rid of a lot of clothes, I'm getting rid of a lot of old stuff, the charity shop loves me," Godley said. But one thing they can control is their material possessions," Morin said. "Selling things, sorting through items, and getting rid of stuff they no longer need may help them feel more in control over something."

“What we learned doing this project is that a lot of people are not represented in breast cancer media. Although the incidence rate of breast cancer is 4% lower among Black women than White women, Black women are 41% more likely to die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer is less common among Asian women than in other ethnic or racial groups, but the disease is the most commonly diagnosed cancer. Eshaana Sheth was 27 when she was diagnosed with hormone receptor positive breast cancer in 2019. Breast cancer is hormone receptor positive when cancer cells have receptors — which the National Cancer Institute describes as binding proteins within the cell — that attach to progesterone or estrogen.

Despite the odds, active managers turned in a better-than-expected performance in 2023, according to a report out today by S & P Global. The bad news: the long-term performance of active managers remained dismal. The majority (60%) of large-cap fund managers underperformed the S & P 500 in 2023, according to S & P Global. While that may not seem like an impressive performance, it is slightly better than the historic average of 64% that underperform the S & P 500. Surprising, because 2023 was a tough year for active managers.

Opening a joint bank account is different from opening up an individual bank account. Both owners have full access to a bank account, and joint bank account rules also dictate specific actions if one owner dies. When you're opening up a new bank account, you'll receive a bank account agreement that lists the bank's conditions and rules. Additional rules to keep in mind with joint bank accountsWhen you open a joint bank account, Bera Daigle also suggests being mindful of another bank account rule — equal withdrawal rights. A joint bank account beneficiary can't set up direct deposits, make withdrawals, or view your bank account when you're alive.

Advances in childhood cancer are a success story in modern medicine. But in the past decade, those strides have stalled for Black and Hispanic youth, opening a gap in death rates, according to a new report published Thursday. Death rates were about the same for Black, Hispanic and white children in 2001, and all went lower during the next decade. Nearly incurable 50 years ago, childhood cancer now is survivable for most patients, especially those with leukemia. The National Cancer Institute is working to gather data from every childhood cancer patient with the goal of linking each child to state-of-the-art care.

Today, 18% of first-time buyers are unmarried couples, the National Association of Realtors found. Because of that, unmarried buyers need to take extra care to protect themselves and their finances before jumping into joint home ownership, Fiffik said. "For unmarried people buying a property, there are no laws or rules that govern what happens when that relationship breaks up," he said. Get honest about your financesBefore you even consider buying a home together, Fiffik suggested getting very honest about your finances. But unmarried couples have a few options when it comes to official ownership of the home, Fiffik said:Only one partner is on the deed and mortgage .

And only a handful of stocks have accounted for the bulk of wealth creation in the stock market in the last 30 years. The good news: U.S. companies are far and away the biggest drivers of stock wealth creation in the last 30 years. Stock market wealth is highly concentrated How can this be? Just five stocks accounted for 10% of global net stock market wealth creation over 31 years. The reason, as this paper demonstrates, is that stock returns are not normally distributed over time.

Moving quickly, even for as little as three minutes a day, may lower your risk of developing more than 10 types of cancer, a new study found. "They called it 'vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity,' so they weren't specifically saying exercise. Little things like taking the stairs and parking farther away from your destination may be very helpful in terms of cancer prevention, Crane tells CNBC Make It. Moving quickly for three to four minutes each day was linked to a 17% to 18% lower risk of developing cancer, and a nearly 30% lower risk of developing one of the 13 types of cancers the study focused on. "In fact, people who are able to have these bursts of energy throughout their day, of activity, seem to see protection from it."

A joint bank account allows two or more people to own a bank account. While you can open a joint bank account with anyone, usually, joint bank accounts are opened by couples or family members. One type of joint bank account that you may be familiar with is a kid's bank account. Joint bank accounts are federally insured for a greater amount than individual bank accounts. Deciding between a joint bank account or an individual bank account will boil down to how you use the account and your goals.

But researchers have found that women in foraging societies were often the ones bringing home the bacon (and other prey, too). Of the 63 foraging communities examined, 50 had records documenting women hunting. Women hunted game of all sizes, “with large game pursued the most,” the study authors reported. Women also used specialized tools: In the Philippines, for example, Agta women hunted with knives, bows and arrows, or a combination of the two weapons, depending on personal preference. In many of the groups, it seemed as though women had a more flexible approach to hunting than men did, Wall-Scheffler said.

Thanks to more effective screening, more women have been presenting with cervical cancer at a younger age and an earlier stage of the disease. “Simple hysterectomy can now be considered as a new standard of care for patients with low-risk early-stage cervical cancer,” Plante said. “This is a really big deal for women with cervical cancer,” said Moore, who wasn’t involved with the study. If the findings lead to a change in practice for surgeons, it could “change the trajectory of cervical cancer globally,” she said. Cervical cancer is not common in the US or Canada, Moore said, but it is endemic in low- and middle-income countries.

New calculations suggest that 1.7 billion T. rexes lived on Earth from 65.5-68 million years ago. This dichotomy between how many T. rexes lived and how few fossils we have of them shows us just how rare fossilization is and how much more we have to learn about these majestic creatures. Warpaintcobra/Getty ImagesMarshall was the lead author of an earlier study that estimated 2.5 billion T. rexes once roamed Earth. Of the roughly 1.7 billion, or so, T. rexes who roamed our planet, scientists have only uncovered a few hundred fossils, equating to fewer than 100 total dinosaurs. Despite their prime conditions for fossilization, if Giebeler's calculations are correct, scientists have only found about 0.0000002% of the T. rex that lived on Earth.
Active vs. passive managers: 2022 was a surprisingly good year for active management. On the plus side for active managers: for large-cap equity fund managers (the largest and most closely-watched category), 51% underperformed their benchmarks last year. Here's the bad news for active managers Active managers often say that while passive investing may often outperform, during periods of high volatility they will have a chance to shine. For example, S & P 500 Growth was down 29%, but S & P 500 Value was down only 5%. "A manager selecting a random stock would have had a 59% chance of beating the S & P 500 and a 30% chance of outperforming the S & P 500 by 20% or better," the authors wrote.

CNN —More people are surviving cancer than ever before in the United States, according to a new report from the American Association for Cancer Research. The report notes that there were only 3 million US cancer survivors in 1971. Declines in smoking and improvements in catching and treating cancer early are driving the change, according to the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2022, released Wednesday. The reversal of Roe v. Wade is also expected to affect cancer care by limiting health care options for pregnant women with cancer, the report said. The Covid-19 pandemic had an effect on cancer in the US, with nearly 10 million breast, colorectal and prostate cancer screenings missed in 2020.
The rising costs of healthcare, longer life expectancies, and other factors have made traditional retirement more expensive than ever. It's time to "retire" some popular retirement advice that no longer makes sense in today's world. That's because Social Security benefits grow the longer you keep from taking them, until you reach age 70. Old advice: You'll probably die young, so plan for retirement accordinglyNew advice: Your money needs to lastFinally, we're no longer in the 1800s. In other words, retirement funds will need to last — especially if you hope to retire before the standard retirement age of 65.
